NEWSSEE – Supporting Early-Career Educators
In July 2012, at the Delta Kappa Gamma International Convention in New York City, a vote was taken by the Executive Board to support a new International Project. SEE, or Supporting Early-Career Educators, has been in effect in other forms for 2 years. Based on the success of the past efforts and the need to make this a priority for our chapters, SEE became an International Project. “Teachers supporting teachers is critical,” so states Let’s Polish the Apple by Supporting Early-Career Educators in the DKG website. Statistics are provided which point to the great number of teachers who leave education within the first 5 years of teaching. For many reasons, education is a far different profession today than it was in the past. Additionally, teachers are retiring and new teachers are needed to fill their valued positions. We are poised as key women educators to take on the role of mentors and supporters of these early-career educators. Whether they join Delta Kappa Gamma as members or not, it is our responsibility to take an active part in fulfilling this International Project. In the past Alpha Xi has reported a total of 321 hours spent in this endeavor and the use of $450 (by individual members and chapters). At the International level, a total of 42,883 hours and $159.995 was reported from all state organizations. Please take time at your chapter meetings to include reports on what has been happening at your member’s schools in SEE. Take time to include SEE in your Strategic Action Plans for your chapters. The next time we report, let’s see our figures double for Alpha Xi. If you would like any ideas in how to incorporate SEE, refer to the DKG website or contact Becky Tish, Alpha Xi First Vice President – [email protected] |
